An Exhaust Fan Should Vent Outside, Not Into the Roof

When an exhaust fan blows steam into the ceiling cavity, moisture can condense on timbers and insulation instead of leaving the home. The result is damp roof spaces and mould that can return on the bathroom ceiling.

We duct every new fan to outside air through the eave, roof or an external wall. The National Construction Code requires outdoor discharge for new work. For windowless apartment bathrooms, we check what the building allows before starting.

A Bathroom Fan Should Actually Clear the Steam

Sometimes, electrical faults can be hidden in circuits or in underground wiring. Electrical faults rarely surface as a sudden emergency. They can be noticed through subtle signs, which are often easy to ignore. These can be heating of an outlet, flickering and dimming of lights, and circuits tripping now and then.A fan that's too small will struggle to clear the mirror and moisture. We size each fan to the room and duct run, then position it above the shower where the steam is produced.

Choose the control that suits how you use the room: with the light, on its own switch, with a run-on timer, or through a smart switch.

What You’ll Notice after a bathroom fan is installed

  • Mirrors clear faster after showers.
  • Better ventilation helps stop recurring mould.
  • A quieter fan replaces rattling, distracting noise.
  • Heat, light, and fan can run from one switch.
  • You receive a Certificate of Compliance for the work.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the fan have to vent outside?

Yes, for new work. The National Construction Code requires exhaust air to discharge outdoors. Venting damp bathroom air into the roof space can lead to condensation, moisture damage, and mould.

Can you replace my old fan without new ducting?

Often, yes. A straight swap can work when the existing duct already runs outside and is in sound condition. If it vents into the roof, we’ll explain the available options.

I'm in a strata apartment. Is that a problem?

Usually not for a like-for-like replacement. A new opening through an external wall or common roof may require strata approval, and we’ll tell you before starting.

Can you add a fan to a bathroom that doesn't have one?

Yes. We can fit one above the shower, duct it outside, and wire it to the light or its own switch. For apartments, we’ll also check building rules first.
