Signs Your Switchboard Needs an Upgrade
Your switchboard is the heart of your home's power. If it shows any of these signs, have it checked.
Ceramic Fuses
Old boards with rewireable ceramic fuses are still common in older homes. A fuse protects the wiring, not the person. It won't cut the power fast enough to stop an electric shock.
No Safety Switch, or Only One
Many boards have one safety switch on the power points and nothing on the lights or other circuits. Every circuit should be protected. And having a safety switch isn't the same as knowing it works, which is why we test them with RCD testing.
No Room Left on the Board
Adding an EV charger, induction cooktop, ducted air conditioning or a backyard studio? If your board has no spare space, it can't safely take the new circuit.
Heat Marks, Burning Smells or Corrosion
Scorch marks, a warm board, a burning smell, or rust inside the enclosure all need attention now. Turn off the main switch if it's safe to reach, and call us.
Add Safety Switches or Replace the Whole Board?
You don't always need a full new board. If your board has room, the wiring is sound, and there are no ceramic fuses, adding safety switches can be the cheaper fix.
A full replacement usually makes more sense when the board:
- Still has ceramic fuses
- Has no space for more safety switches
- Has an asbestos backing panel
- Shows heat damage, corrosion, or loose connections
We'll look at your board and tell you honestly which option suits. If a few safety switches will do the job, that's what we'll quote.
What Does a Switchboard Upgrade Cost in Sydney?
Older homes, three-phase power, or extra work can cost more. These are the things that change the price:
- How many circuits your home has
- Single-phase or three-phase power
- Whether the existing enclosure can be kept or needs replacing
- An asbestos backing panel
- The condition of the meter and mains
- Apartment meter-room access or strata requirements
We look at your board, then give you a fixed price in writing. You approve it before any work starts. No hourly surprises.

Do I get a compliance certificate?
Yes. In NSW, switchboard work must be done by a licensed electrician. You get a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) when the job is done.
How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?
Ceramic fuses, no safety switch on some circuits, no spare room, scorch marks, or a burning smell are all signs. Send us a photo of your board, and we'll tell you.
Can I just add a safety switch instead?
Sometimes. If your board has room, the wiring is sound, and there are no ceramic fuses, adding safety switches can be cheaper. Boards with ceramic fuses, no space, or an asbestos backing usually need replacing.
Do I need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?
Not always. An EV charger is a big load, so we check your board first. If it has room and safety switches on every circuit, it may be fine. If not, we'll upgrade the board before installing the charger.
How long will my power be off?
Most standard home upgrades take 3 to 5 hours. Three-phase boards can take longer. We'll tell you the timing when we quote so that you can plan around it.
